Report on promoting education for girls and young women in India

Since 2021, the funds made available have been used to support children and young people – especially girls and young women – in cooperation with the local organisation “Welfare Association For The Rural Mass” (WARM) to significantly improve their educational opportunities.

The WARM site in Chengam is located 20 km from the city of Tiruvannamalai in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Children often have to work to support their families and girls in particular are therefore unable to attend school. The aim is to enable these children to attend school and subsequently continue their education by supporting their families with food.

The Christian Bürkert Foundation’s sponsorship project comprises the following elements:

Every year, 100 children from the villages in the densely forested area around Chengam are supported and attend school for the first time in the non-formal education centres (NFE) run by the WARM organisation.
Every year, 45 young women are trained to work as tailors or embroiderers at the training centre in Chengam.
Together with WARM, the foundation initiated a scholarship programme for secondary education for girls. Thanks to the programme, 10 girls who attend the WARM non-formal learning centres and who perform well in school will be admitted to the 9th grade of secondary school each year. There, they will receive targeted learning support to enable them to complete formal secondary education. 40 schoolgirls are currently being supported with a secondary school scholarship.

Bericht zur Bildungsförderung für Mädchen und junge Frauen in Indien

Mit den zur Verfügung gestellten Mitteln werden seit 2021 in Kooperation mit der lokalen Organisation „Welfare Association For The Rural Mass“ (WARM) Kinder und Jugendliche, insbesondere Mädchen und junge Frauen gefördert, um ihre Bildungschancen deutlich zu verbessern.

Der WARM-Standort in Chengam liegt 20 km von der Stadt Tiruvannamalai entfernt im südindischen Bundesstaat Tamil Nadu. Kinder müssen oft arbeiten, um den Lebensunterhalt ihrer Familie zu sichern, und insbesondere Mädchen können deshalb keine Schule besuchen. Diesen Kindern soll der Schulbesuch und eine anschließende Ausbildung ermöglicht werden, indem zusätzlich auch deren Familien mit Lebensmitteln unterstützt werden.

Folgende Elemente umfasst das Förderprojekt der Christian Bürkert Stiftung:

Jedes Jahr werden 100 Kinder aus den Dörfern der dicht bewaldeten Umgebung von Chengam unterstützt und erhalten erste Schulbildung in den non-formalen Lernzentren (NFE) der Organisation WARM.
Jährlich erhalten 45 junge Frauen im Ausbildungszentrum in Chengam eine Berufsausbildung zur Schneiderin oder Stickerin.
In Kooperation mit WARM wurde ein Stipendienprogramm zur Sekundarstufenbildung für Mädchen initiiert. Durch das Programm werden jährlich 10 Mädchen aus den non-formalen Lernzentren von WARM, die gute schulische Leistungen erbringen, in die 9. Klasse der Sekundarstufe einer weiterführenden Schule aufgenommen und mit gezielter Lernunterstützung gefördert, um ihnen einen formalen Sekundarschulabschluss zu ermöglichen. Aktuell werden 40 Schülerinnen mit einem Sekundarstufen-Stipendium gefördert.
